The Obama administration is adding the US-born, al-Qaeda-linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki to a terrorism blacklist that will slap him with sanctions aimed at cutting off his financial support.
A senior State Department official said Friday that the Treasury Department would put al-Awlaki on its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists. That would aim to freeze his assets, bar Americans from sending him money and ban him from traveling to the United States. The official spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement of the step. (AP)
