The United Nations has added US-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki to its terrorist list, forcing member countries to freeze his assets and ban his travel, the US State Department announced Tuesday.
Al-Awlaki has taken on a greater role with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as a recruiter, trainer and planner. He also played a key part in recent terror attacks in America including the failed Christmas Day attempt to take down a Detroit-bound passenger jet. The UN move follows similar actions by the US Treasury last week. Al-Awlaki is believed to be in hiding in Yemen.
