Military sources confirm tanks fired at Palestinians approaching border fence near northern Strip town of Beit Hanoun after rocket launching cell spotted in area. Gaza sources report two of injured in serious condition. Explosion sounds heard in Sderot area

Two people were killed and eight were injured from an Israel Defense Forces shell fired at the northern Strip town of Beit Hanoun, Palestinian sources reported Wednesday afternoon.

One of the injured were said to be in serious condition, while the other seven sustained light to moderate wounds. One of the killed men was identified as Muhammad Caparana. It was unclear whether the injured were civilians or gunmen.

Gunshot sounds and explosions were heard in the northern Strip at around 4:15 pm. According to military sources, IDF tanks fired at suspected gunmen spotted approaching the border fence. Palestinian sources confirmed that a rocket launching cell had been active in the area.

The sounds were also heard in Sderot and nearby communities. "I live on the northernmost part of the city, and we heard two or three loud explosions, which rocked the house," a Sderot resident told Ynet.

Last month, the Israel Air Force bombed a weapons warehouse and two smuggling tunnels in the southern Strip. Several hours earlier, a Qassam rocket exploded near a kibbutz north of the Gaza Strip and two mortar shells exploded south of a kibbutz in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council. There were no reports of injuries or damage in all incidents.
