The top United Nations aid official in Gaza said Thursday that more than 7,000 children in the Palestinian territory have simultaneously dribbled basketballs for five minutes in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

The event took place on a bombed-out airport runway near the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Local UN chief John Ging says he expects to know in a few days if the children set the record. To do so, they must beat a 2007 record set in Indiana.

The event was part of the UN's summer camps for about 250,000 Gaza children.

The UN said Gaza children set their first world record last year by simultaneously flying more than 3,000 kites – a record they will try to break next week.
