BUG stores to sell iPad in Israel

Retail chain begins presale of Apple's much discussed tablet computer; iPad expected to be in stores by August 11. Apple reseller in Israel, iDigital, says move 'irresponsible, misleading public'

Electronics and computer retailer BUG will be selling iPads in Israel, angering Apple reseller iDigital, Calcalist reported Wednesday.

BUG has begun presales of the WiFi version of Apple's tablet. The 16 GB model will sell for NIS 3,799 (about $1,008) and the 64 GB version will cost NIS 4,899 ($1,300). According to BUG's website, the product will be in stores next week, by August 11.

The fact that BUG will be selling the iPad does not connote its official release in Israel. While BUG is the first nation-wide chain marketing iPads in Israel, purchasing the tablet computer there will be similar in nature to purchasing it through private importers.

Apple reseller iDigital says that selling the iPad at BUG stores and through similar importers constitutes "an irresponsible consumerist move, and could mislead the public."

According to iDigital, "These importers do not tell the customers that the iPad they are purchasing does not come with an Apple warranty or repair services, and that selling the iPad without localization and Hebrew language compatibility will significantly disrupt the user experience."

iDigital suggested that whoever is interested in purchasing an iPad should "wait patiently for a few more weeks and purchase the product through Apple's official representative in Israel."

According to iDigital, the tablet computer will be sold in its stores "with a full Apple warranty, repair services, professional support, and of course, complete Hebrew language compatibility."

iDigital and the cellular phone companies have been planning on selling the WiFi and WiFi + 3G versions of the iPad for some time, and will apparently be marketing them in November.
