The UN Security Council is calling on Iraq to address all outstanding issues related to Kuwait, oil-for-food program contracts, and disarmament so it can cancel sanctions and dozens of resolutions adopted since the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
The council made the call in a resolution Thursday that extended the UN's civilian mission in Iraq for a year. Iraq's UN Ambassador Hamid al-Bayati told the council Wednesday that "the most important issue facing Iraq ... remains to get rid of the burden" of resolutions that can be militarily enforced.
