The head of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's party says Europe should bring back border guards to fight illegal immigration.
Xavier Bertrand, chief of the governing conservative party UMP, is quoted by Nice-Matin newspaper as saying "better regulation is indispensable, on the European level, where we must put back coast guards and border guards." Sarkozy has targeted immigrants with a series of tough recent pronouncements, seen as a bid to appeal to extreme-right voters to revive his dismal approval ratings. (AP)
