'Anne Frank' tree falls over in heavy wind, rain

A giant chestnut tree that comforted Dutch diarist Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic collapsed in heavy wind and rain on Monday, a spokesman for the Anne Frank House said.
"It broke off like a match. It broke off completely about one metre off the ground," the spokesman for the house-turned-museum said. The 150-year-old white horse chestnut tree had developed fungus, and saplings from the tree were planted in an Amsterdam park last year. (Reuters)
