An aide to Iraq's top Shiite cleric is calling on lawmakers to buy ice for people who are suffering through a hot summer with frequent electricity shortages. Ahmed al-Safi, an aide to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, a revered figure with Iraq's Shiite majority, said that since lawmakers are not working, they should donate their earnings to buy ice for poor people.
Iraq has been struggling through a summer where temperatures have climbed over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. At the same time, most Iraqis are frustrated at the inability of their political leaders to form a new government almost six months after March elections. (AP)
