Israelis expelled from Moscow shul

Rabbi refuses to let Israeli tourists enter Russian capital's main synagogue due to their earlier visit to local churches

A group of 14 tourists from Israel was expelled from Moscow's main synagogue last week. The rabbi who ordered them to leave explained that he had done so because they had visited several churches before arriving at the synagogue.

The synagogue, located near the Kremlin in the Russian capital, was built in 1874.

According to the Israelis, the rabbi told them, "The Israeli tourists enter churches as well, and this is immoral. I might let you go up to the women's section and look at the synagogue gallery, but you will not enter the big hall and will not approach the Holy Ark."
