Report: US to keep aiding Lebanese army

Al-Nahar reports Obama backing continued military support, halted after border incident last month

The US administration will continue to supply the Lebanese army with weaponry and equipment, Al-Nahar quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

The Lebanese paper reported Saturday morning that the sources said US President Barack Obama had commended the military and that he supported the State Department's desire to continue the flow of aid, estimated at $100 million.

"Washington also demanded that the army command exercise restraint and not grant Israel an excuse to attack," the paper quoted the sources as saying.

"The situation in the region is very sensitive because if Israel attacks Iran then the front in southern Lebanon will erupt."

Last month Washington halted military aid to Lebanon following the border incident in which an IDF officer was killed, stating that an investigation into Hezbollah's possible involvement was needed.

A few days later State Department spokesman P.J Crowley said the US would continue aiding Lebanon after it received satisfying answers. The statement was a response to Lebanon's retort that if the US continued to name conditions it could "keep its money and give it to Israel".
