'Arab spy' celebrates release: I was persecuted

Balad member Omar Said, who was suspected of severe security offences, returns to his Kfar Kana home following release from prison. 'When it comes to Arabs the Shin Bet is quick to pull the trigger,' he tells dozens of friends, relatives

Dozens of relatives, friends and Balad party activists arrived at Dr. Omar Said's home in the Galilee town of Kafr Kanna on Monday to celebrate his release from prison after completing a seven-month sentence for aiding an illegal organization.

"My release proves that my arrest was politically-motivated. When it comes to Arabs the Shin Bet is quick to pull the trigger," Said told Ynet.

Said was initially suspected of serious security offences as part of an espionage affair involving Ameer Makhoul, but was eventually convicted of a lesser charge as part of a plea bargain.

Said's wife Inam told Ynet she was afraid the Shin Bey would frame him. "I knew all along he had not broken the law. I am very familiar with my husband's opinions, which he voices both verbally and in writing. This was persecution. They (the authorities) wanted to send a message to the Arab public through him," she said.

A Palestinian flag was hung at the front of Said's home, and celebratory gunshots were fired as he arrived accompanied by his wife and three daughters.

"I have claimed all along that this was political persecution, and it has been revealed today," Said said. "I am certain that Ameer (Makhoul) will be released next."

Balad Chairman Jamal Zahalka was also among those who welcomed Said home. "Omar rejected attempts to recruit him because he is a member of the party. This goes to show all those who slam Balad that we are a law-abiding party," said the Knesset member.
