Tax benefits given to different communities in Israel
discriminate against Arab towns, which do not enjoy any tax subsidies, the High Court of Justice ruled Wednesday.
The judges ordered the government and the Knesset to repair the situation in the next budget legislation, warning that if the government failed to fix the discrimination – the court would issue a ruling imposing the government to do so.
The High Court handed its ruling following petitions filed in 2005 by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, the Adalah organization and Arab communities which pointed to discrimination in tax reductions.
The judges criticized the State's foot-dragging on the issue, ruling that "the government and the Knesset have failed systematically, for the past several years, to solve the issue despite the attorney general's stand."
