Shalit family continues Jerusalem protest

Few ministers visit Noam and Aviva Shalit's protest tent outside prime minister's residence. Kidnapped soldier's father says unaware of progress in efforts to release his son, has no intention of leaving site until Gilad returns

The Shalit family has been camped outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem for more than two months, but the father of the kidnapped soldier says he has no plans of ending the protest.

On Sunday, several ministers came to offer their support to the family members who protested while the cabinet held its weekly meeting.

Noam Shalit held a sign which read: "An IDF soldier is no Kapparot chicken. Do not project your sins on Gilad." The captive soldier's mother, Aviva, carried a sign which said: "Netanyahu – a country that forgets its soldiers is doomed to be forgotten by them." Other signs and balloons read "help."

Among the few ministers who visited the family was Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman.

Noam Shalit told Ynet that as far as he was aware there has been no progress in efforts to release his son. "We continue our routine in Jerusalem as we've done in the past two months. We intend to stay here until Gilad is released. Meanwhile, there are no breakthroughs, there are efforts to renew talks but no new headlines."

Several Israelis are slated to take the protest overseas next week. Protestors are scheduled to create a sukka outside the UN headquarters in Geneva on Monday while Tuesday will see activists holding a demonstration to demand that the UN and Red Cross promote Gilad's release. They will also be demanding for a Red Cross visit for the captive soldier.

Gilad's brother Yoel will represent the family in an event in Switzerland.
