Rivlin: Referendum – only after preliminary discussion

None

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said that before holding a referendum on a possible agreement with the Palestinians, the cabinet and the Knesset must hold a preliminary discussion.

"A referendum is meant for political needs, but when speaking of constitutional needs, it's a different case," he said in reference to a bill backed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, "The late prime minister, Menachem Begin, asked to hold a referendum that was translated into an election only after going through preliminary discussion in the cabinet and the parliament."
