Livni, Mofaz try to work out differences

After prolonged rift, repeated mutual accusations Kadima chairwoman initiates meeting with biggest rival within party

After months of tensions, squabbles and a prolonged rift Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni and her "arch nemesis" Shaul Mofaz met for lunch at a Jerusalem restaurant on Tuesday.

The meeting was initiated by Livni in an attempt to resolve the differences with Mofaz and achieve unity within Kadima.

Mofaz made harsh accusations against Livni in the past, claiming she compromised the party and acted irresponsibly. The chairwoman, in turn, charged that Mofaz had resorted to self-pity since losing the primaries race. The harsh exchanges eventually led to a prolonged rift between the two.

Mofaz's office said that Livni had proposed a meeting and that the two discussed various issues on the national agenda. The meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere, the sources said. The chairwoman's office refused to comment on the report.

At the height of their conflict earlier this year, Mofaz blamed Livni for causing damage to the State of Israel, Kadima and faction members.

"When I see the damage she caused I can't stand by idly," he said.

Several hours later, Livni convened Kadima Knesset members in an attempt to calm the atmosphere. This move, too, was criticized by Mofaz at the time.
