Iran: Bomb attack during military parade kills 10
Most victims women gathered to watch parade marking anniversary of Iran-Iraq war; provincial governor of West Azerbaijan province says 'counter-revolutionaries' behind attack
Iranian state television said a bomb exploded among a crowd of spectators at a military parade in western Iran, killing 10 people and injuring 20 others.
A report by the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted a provincial governor as saying Wednesday's attack was likely carried out by militants.
"Counter-revolutionary groups, by inserting themselves among the people attending the armed forces parade, showed their heinous faith," said Vahid Jalalzadeh, the provincial governor of Iran's West Azerbaijan province.
That report said most of the victims of the blast in the town of Mahabad were women who had gathered to watch the parade, one of several events around the country to mark the anniversary of the start of the Iran-Iraq war.
The report quotes provincial police chief Gen. Mohammad Ali Nosrati as saying several people were killed and injured. He did not provide an exact number.
