French strikes to cause serious transport disruption

France faces a further round of serious rail and air traffic disruption from strikes beginning late Wednesday as trade unions seek to mobilise millions of protesters against plans to raise the retirement age.
The strikes, scheduled to last 24 hours, come just two weeks after more than a million people took to the streets to protest over a pension reform deemed unjust by unions but essential by President Nicolas Sarkozy as austerity takes hold in Europe. (Reuters)
