Mubarak, Merkel to 'monitor settlement freeze issue'

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Israel and the Palestinians to "demonstrate leadership and creativity in the peace negotiations."

In a joint statement, the two leaders said they believed the direct talks were a rare opportunity to move forward in the peace process, and that they would monitor the developments in the settlement construction freeze issue. (AFP)
