In what may be a signal of a thaw in relations between Egypt and Hezbollah, Cairo's Consul General in Beirut, Ahmad Hilmi, met on Friday with Hassan Izz al-Din, a senior member of the Shiite group.
Ties between Egypt and Hezbollah have been strained since the uncovering of a Hezbollah cell that planned to carry out a series of terror attacks in Egyptian territory.
The Lebanese daily Al Akhbar reported that the meeting was held after Hilmi made repeated requests through a mutual acquaintance to meet in secret with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.
In light of these requests, Izz al-Din, who is in charge of Hezbollah's relations with Arab countries, met Hilmi for the second time.
According to the report, the two did not discuss the Hezbollah cell members who are jailed in Egypt.
The 26 Hezbollah terrorists, whose capture was made public in April 2009, were charged with a long list of offenses, including planning terror attacks in Egyptian territory and illegal possession of explosives.
The prosecution demanded the death sentence, but an Egyptian court eventually handed down sentences ranging from six to 25 years in prison.
Meanwhile, London-based newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi Friday that Nasrallah has sent Hezbollah operatives to Sudan in order to fight "imperialistic forces" in Darfur. The report has not been verified.
