Abbas: Palestinians won't act hastily

Palestinian president says will not react 'hastily' to Israel's renewal of construction in settlements

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy that he would not respond hastily to the end of Israel's moratorium on West Bank settlement construction.

Abbas, who was in Paris Monday, said he would provide a final response on the matter after an Arab League summit scheduled for October 4.

Addressing his his host, the Palestinian president said: "We've been in agreement from the first day we met. We are headed in the same direction on the same path. The French government aspires for just peace and the establishment of a Palestinian state. We both agree that the settlements freeze must continue."

"We are not rushing to respond and we will study the consequences and their effect on the negotiations. After meetings and consultations we will formulate a stance and provide the Palestinian response to the cessation of the freeze," he said.

Sarkozy, for his part, said that "Israel must stop building in the settlements," lamenting the end of the freeze.

Meanwhile, in Damascus, Hamas Politburo Chief Khaled Mashaal urged Abbas to halt all negotiations with Israel because of the renewal of construction, which began in the large settlement bloc in Ariel Monday morning.

"I want to appeal to my brothers in the Palestinian Authority who have said that they do not want to renew talks with the enemy if the settlement of the (Palestinian) territories continues," he told the parliament in Syria.

"Negotiations not held from a position of power are absurd. Netanyahu is not the man who can bring peace to the region," Mashaal said.
