US Marine Gen. James Jones, President Barack Obama's national security adviser, is stepping down and will be replaced by his top deputy Tom Donilon, two senior administration officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

Obama was to announce the change in a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden on Friday with both men. Jones' resignation will take effect in two weeks. (AP)
