Germany to weigh in on disputed Cyprus

None

Germany's chancellor says she will try to help resolve the conflict over Cyprus to help push Turkey's EU membership bid ahead. Angela Merkel told journalists Saturday she will travel to the divided Mediterranean island in January and try to see "if Germany can be helpful in overcoming the difficulties."

Merkel spoke alongside visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and said "obviously both sides have to make an effort." She also voiced support for opening new chapters in the stalled talks between Brussels and Ankara. (AP)
