Portugal will be the fifth temporary member of the security council at the United Nations, after Canada conceded its candidacy. The Canadian ambassador to the UN announced the concession after both Canada and Portugal failed to gain a majority of votes in two different elections at the general assembly.
Germany, India, South Africa and Colombia were also elected earlier today for a two-year term on the council. None of the newly elected nations will be allowed to cast a veto. (AP)
