Benoit Mandelbrot, a well-known French Jewish mathematician who was largely responsible for developing the field of fractal geometry, has died. He was 85.
His wife, Aliette, says he died Thursday of pancreatic cancer. He had lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. (AP)
