Galant: Gaza op didn't solve south Israel's security issues

Negev community leaders hold farewell ceremony for incoming IDF chief, who hopes 'calm along all borders will persist'

Addressing the effects of Operation Cast Lead, Southern Command chief and incoming chief of staff Major-General Yoav Galant said, "It did not solve the problem in the south or the conflict."

During a farewell ceremony held in his honor Sunday at a kibbutz in the Negev, Galant said the military offensive in Gaza did prove however that "when we carry out missions properly results can be seen.

"I wish the calm in the south and along all our borders persists. The Israel Defense Forces are using the calm state to prepare themselves," he said.

The heads of the Negev's local councils thanked Galant and said they were proud of his appointment as next IDF chief.

"We are glad you are becoming chief of staff but sad you are leaving us," Sderot Mayor David Buskila said.
