Attorney general: Barak's wife should be indicted

Nili Priel's offer to pay fine for illegally employing foreign worker rejected by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein rejected a request by the defense minister's wife, Nili Priel, to pay a fine for employing a foreign worker in a bid to close the case.

In a letter to Priel, Weinstein said that the case's circumstances warrant an indictment and not a fine.

The attorney general said there was no sufficient evidence as of yet in the case, and noted that Priel would therefore likely be summoned for questioning soon.

"This was allegedly a case of a foreign worker who had a work permit for the nursing field and was employed for a relatively long time in housekeeping," he said. "Your willingness to pay a fine therefore cannot put an end to the affair."

The case against Priel was closed earlier after officials said the foreign worker in question, identified as Virginia, could not be located. However, following a conversation Sunday between Israel Radio reporter Carmela Menashe and the worker, senior legal officials estimated that the case will be reopened.

Following public criticism, Priel sent a letter to Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, asking to pay a fine for illegally employing Virginia.

In her latest letter, as was the case in the past, Priel refused to say why she did not hand over the foreign worker's phone number to authorities.
