Israeli bands to help PR efforts?

Embassies worldwide suggest plans for improving Israel's image, including shows by Hadag Nachash

The Foreign Ministry demanded this week that Israel's embassies in Western Europe and North America convey to Jerusalem new plans for public relations in their country, stressing the need to label the state anew, Ynet learned Wednesday.

Among the suggestions made were a number of original ideas. An embassy located in Europe said Israel should fly successful bands, such as Hadag Nachash and Infected Mushroom, to campuses around the continent to perform.

Another embassy suggested the sale of cook books featuring traditional Israeli dishes in Europe.

The Foreign Ministry is also considering inviting delegations of journalists to Israel, as well as a plan to send famous Israeli thinkers, some of them Nobel Prize laureates, to speak abroad. There is also a plan employing an "Israel day" at universities.

"Every year the Foreign Ministry appeals to its embassies around the world to prepare a plan of action, according to which the budget is allocated to activities," says spokesman Yossi Levy.

"The plans refer to the political, PR, cultural, and economic aims of the State of Israel throughout the world, every capital according to its suggestions."

Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said he would triple the budget allotted to international cooperation focusing on assistance to third world countries, including rescue missions to states hit by calamity.

"This is a central tool in Israel's foreign policy. We are building relationships based on mutual assistance on joint interests," he said.
