Diskin: iPhones give terrorists intel

Shin Bet chief says technology has removed psychological barriers for carrying out mega-terror attacks. 'Internet technologies accessible to public, like Google Earth, iPhones, supply terrorists with super intelligence,' he says

Shin Bet versus iPhone and Google: "Internet technologies that are accessible to the general public like Google Earth webcams and iPhone applications supply super intelligence", Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin said at a conference on homeland security in Tel Aviv on Monday as he described the new challenges his organization has to contend with.

The Shin Bet chief spoke of the additional online threat: "People surf the web to certain sites, are brainwashed by Al-Qaeda operatives and receive instructions on how to deal with organizations like the Shin Bet."

Diskin added that the ease of availability of information allows terror to go global. "Hamas and the Islamic Jihad purchase advanced weapons systems from Iran and North Korea. These resources are sent on to Yemen, Sudan and from there they are smuggled through Egypt to Gaza. Meanwhile terror organizations send their operatives to Iran where the operatives undergo training so that they can use the advanced weapons systems."

Diskin also referred to threats to civic aviation which have become a major issue after last weekend's revelations over foiled terror attacks: "There is an ever growing debate in the field of global civic aviation over the issue of explosive devices and suicide bombers.

"Today's terror capabilities mean that it is possible to hit critical infrastructure from afar. The accessibility of advanced weapons systems, such as explosive materials, rockets and pilotless aircrafts which were available exclusively to countries are now available to all. Knowledge that enables the preparation of weapons of mass destruction has also become easily available.

"But what concerns me more than anything else is that the 21 century is characterized by the removal of the psychological barriers for carrying out mega-terror attacks."

Diskin noted that "it is possible to fight terrorist capabilities and even to win, but winning the war against global terror demands a perception of global cooperation among nations which will enable the sharing of the information amassed by each country.

"Sharing intelligence and global cooperation on technology development, operational cooperation on the highest level, development of an international legal infrastructure which will make additional tools to fight the war on terror available, I believe these things are firmly within reach."
