More than 50 dead after boat capsizes off east India

Rescuers have recovered 54 bodies from the Bay of Bengal after a boat capsized off the east coast of India and said on Monday they feared more people could be dead. Authorities said 73 people were still missing and 93 had been rescued from the 220 pilgrims who were aboard the boat when it sank near Ghoramara island, West Bengal state, on Saturday and that the chances of more survivors were increasingly slim.

"The search operation for the day is over due to very bad weather and rough seas. We will continue our search operations early morning," G.D. Gautama, West Bengal's top bureaucrat, said. The boat was overcrowded and capsized after it hit a sand bar in the rough sea. (Reuters)
