Lebanon: 3 'Israel spies' sentenced to death

Military court sentences three Lebanese nationals to death for helping Israeli attacks during war; two of them sentenced in absentia

A Lebanese military court on Monday sentenced three people who were convicted of spying for Israel to death.

Two of the Lebanese nationals, Sami Farhat and Amar al-Halabi were sentenced in absentia because they have fled the country. The third Lebanese man who was sentenced is Jawdat el-Hakim.

The three were found guilty of disclosing sensitive information that helped Israeli attacks during the Second Lebanon War. The men still have the option of appealing to a higher court.

The Lebanese military court recently sentenced four other Lebanese nationals to death for similar offenses, while many others are currently being prosecuted.

Al-Hakim had admitted to cooperating with Israel between 1999 and 2009. His job was to transfer large sums of money and transmission apparatus to other agents allegedly working for Israel. Some reports said he had undergone training in Israel.
