IDF arrests senior Hamas official

Dr. Mahmoud al-Ramahi, last detained after Shalit capture, arrested at home in Ramallah

A senior Hamas official was arrested early Wednesday morning by IDF soldiers at his Ramallah home in the West Bank, Palestinian sources said.

Dr. Mahmoud al-Ramahi, a representative of Hamas and one of the officials representing Ramallah in the Palestinian parliament, was most recently detained after the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit. He was released last year.

A few weeks ago the IDF detained a Hamas parliament member from Hebron, prompting accusations from the organization that Israel was reinstating its policy of frequent arrests.

There are currently seven Hamas parliament members behind bars in Israeli prison, a far cry from the 40 detained after Shalit was captured.

Among Hamas operatives released recently are Wusfi Kabha, former minister of prisoner affairs, and the speaker of the Palestinian parliament, Dr. Aziz Dweik.
