UN: Easements brought no change to Gaza

Head of UN operations in Strip says despite additional goods crossing over, few people have actually noticed a difference in quality of life

The United Nations is unimpressed with Israel's easing of restrictions on the Gaza Strip, the BBC reported Thursday. The head of UN operations in Gaza said that despite the additional goods crossing over, few people have actually noticed a difference in quality of life.

"There's been no material change for the people on the ground here in terms of their status, the aid dependency, the absence of any recovery or reconstruction, no economy," John Ging told the BBC.

"The easing, at it was described, has been nothing more than a political easing of the pressure on Israel and Egypt."

In June, following the calamitous outcome of an aid flotilla to Gaza, which ended in the deaths of nine Turkish citizens, Israel said it would remove some of the restrictions on goods entering the Strip.

However the limitations on exports remain, which seriously harms the Gazan economy. Restrictions on the coming and going of residents of the Strip also remain in place, with permits to enter Israel difficult to acquire.

John Ging accuses Israel of ignoring international demands to lift the blockade. But Israel says the UN is ignoring the threat of Hamas.

"Why is the border closed? Because a professed terror organization has taken over the Strip," says Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor.
