Germany lifts Yemen passenger flight ban

German authorities are again allowing passenger flights from Yemen but keeping in place a ban on cargo transports from the country that was put in place after a mail bomb plot was uncovered last month.

Germany's transportation ministry said that officials decided flights carrying only passengers and their belongings could land in the country again, after German authorities sent to Yemen to determined security measures there were satisfactory.

Germany was one of several countries, including the US, Britain, and France, to ban all cargo coming in from Yemen after two suspicious packages sent from Yemen were intercepted.

They contained the industrial explosive PETN packed into the toner cartridges destined for addresses in the US.

British police said that the mail bomb at an English airport could have exploded over the East Coast of the United States.

Authorities on both sides of the Atlantic said they only narrowly thwarted the plot. They said terrorists in Yemen hid two powerful bombs inside printers and shipped them to addresses in Chicago.
