US: No comment on Netanyahu's demand for guarantees in writing

State Department Spokesperson Philip Crowley declined to comment on reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had demanded guarantees from Washington in writing in exchange for renewing the settlement construction freeze.
Crowley said he did not intend to go into details concerning the US stand, noting only that the US is trying to persuade the two sides to return to negotiations. The current situation is unacceptable, he said, adding that the US still thinks an agreement within 12 months remains possible. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington)
