Jordan: Probe attack on diplomats
Foreign minister summons Israeli ambassador to Jordan, demands investigation of police 'aggression' against employees of Tel Aviv embassy. Police spokesman says two were interrogated 'shortly' due to ID confusion
Jordan formally complained to Israel Wednesday about a police interrogation of two members of the Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv and demanded a formal investigation, the Petra news agency reported.
Foreign Minister Nasser Jawdeh summoned the Israeli ambassador to Jordan and sent a protest note in response to "aggression against two staff members of the Jordanian embassy" in Israel.
The note calls for Israeli authorities to "investigate the incident and take all measures to prevent it from happening again," the agency said.
Israeli police questioned Tuesday two members of the Jordanian Embassy after doubts were raised by officers about the authenticity of their documents of identification.
"They were interrogated shortly in the area where police patrol," Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the police, told AFP.
"Their identity card and passports do not match exactly. They were released after a short period when things had been clarified," he said.
But the embassy employees told Jordanian news agencies that they were attacked by police officers while making their way home. One of the employees gave an interview from the hospital, where he was placed due to injuries sustained from the incident.
