Mubarak warns of wave of global terror

Egyptian president meets with king of Bahrain, says if Palestinian issue is not solved, terror will spread throughout world against Israel and its supporters

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday called for the renewal of talks between Israel and the Palestinians and warned against a wave of global terror that would occur if the Palestinian issue wasn't solved.

"We don't want negotiations to stop," said Mubarak during a visit in Bahrain, after meeting with King Hamad ibn Isa in the capital of Manama. "If negotiations are not renewed, then Israel would continue to build within the length and breadth of Palestinian lands and the time will come when the Palestinian state won't have enough land to build on and terror will spread throughout the world against Israel and those who support it.

"This is the reason that the peace talks demand our complete attention", the Egyptian president explained. "We aren't forcing anything on the Palestinians – we deliberate, we advise, we take their wished into account and we adopt those wished," he added.

A senior Bahraini official told a French news agency that Mubarak and King Hamad discussed efforts to bring about the renewal of the peace talks that were stopped due to the renewal of construction in the settlements.

He noted that Mubarak briefed the king about the "latest contacts between the Palestinian Authority and the US." He added that "the Israeli obstacles to the renewal of negotiations weren't acceptable."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in principal to a three-month renewal of the settlement construction freeze in return for a 'incentives package' from the US but the negotiations over a written agreement of the incentives package are still ongoing.

Netanyahu made it clear to Likud party members that "as long as there is no written agreement we cannot move forward. The reality is complex which is why we need an unequivocal commitment from the US."
