Police in Bangladesh fired tear gas on Saturday to break up a protest held in support of the main opposition party leader, police and witnesses said. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is preparing for a day-long strike on Nov. 30 against the eviction of former prime minister and party chief Begum Khaleda Zia from a house where she had lived for 40 years.
About 30 people were wounded in Barishal, about 300 km (188 miles) south of Dhaka, and dozens were detained when police used tear gas to quell a protest organised ahead of the strike. Street marches were also held in other parts of Bangladesh where police used batons to break up crowds. (Reuters)
