German president: We see ourselves responsible for Israel's security
The President of Germany Christian Wulff met in Jerusalem with President Shimon Peres on Sunday and said "I requested that my first official visit outside of Europe be to Israel so that I could express the fact that joint relations between Germany and Israel were close to my heart. Germany sees itself as responsible for protecting Israel's security and its right to exist", he noted.
Later on Peres will accompany his German counterpart on an official visit to Yad Vashem where they will hold a memorial service. The German president will also meet with other Israeli officials as well as the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. (Ronen Medzini)
