Braverman: Labor must issue ultimatum to PM

Minister lauds Histadrut chief's call to quit coalition in light of stalled peace talks. Herzog: Let's wait a few more weeks

"Labor has reached the point where if it doesn't become aggressive and issue an ultimatum to (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu, the peace process will collapse and the party will be forced to leave the coalition," Minorities Minister Avishay Braverman said Thursday.

Braverman lauded Histadrut labor federation chairman Ofer Eini for calling on Labor to leave the coalition in light of the stalled peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

On Tuesday Braverman presented Labor Secretary-General Hilik Bar with 500 signatures of Labor Committee members who are demanding that it be convened urgently to discuss the possibility of issuing an ultimatum to Netanyahu, this after talks between the US regarding another construction freeze in the West Bank failed.

Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog, who, like Braverman, is looking to replace Defense Minister Ehud Barak as Labor chief, said the party should wait a few weeks "to see if something progresses on the diplomatic front."

Labor officials have speculated that Minister of Industry, Trade, and Labor Binyamin Ben-Eliezer would soon join the call to issue an ultimatum to the prime minister.
