Report: 2 killed in Gaza blast

Palestinian sources say two residents dead after old shell explodes on street in Sajaiyeh neighborhood

Two Gaza residents were killed Friday as an old shell exploded in the eastern Gaza City neighborhood of Sajaiyeh, Palestinian sources reported.

According to the sources, one of the people died immediately while the other was badly injured in the explosion, which occurred in the middle of the street, and died of his wounds later on. The origin of the shell has yet to be determined.

In a separate incident earlier Friday, two Palestinians were lightly to moderately injured from Israeli fire near the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya. According to Palestinian sources, an IDF force opened fire after the two approached the border fence, apparently in search of gravel.

On Wednesday evening, the Israel Air Force attacked three Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to mortar shells fired at Israel, which lightly injured a security coordinator at the Eshkol Regional Council. The bombed targets included a weapons cache in the northern Strip and two terrorist activity centers in southern Gaza. There were no reports of injuries.

About a week ago, an IDF force killed two terrorists spotted trying to plant an explosive device near the border fence in the northern Strip. Two Kalashnikov rifles and an explosive charge were found on their bodies.

Palestinian sources confirmed later on that the two were members of the al-Quds Brigades, the Islamic Jihad's military wing, and were trying to plant an explosive device.
