Thank you, Tom Friedman

Op-ed: NY Times columnist right for once; US should step back, let us solve our own problems

I must admit, it is very rare that I agree with anything that New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman says concerning Israel. His recent article, “Reality Check”, with the usual condescending attitude towards Israel, was no different.

While many in Israel believe that the implementation of the two-state solution will eventually lead to the destruction of a reduced and vulnerable State of Israel, Friedman assures us that such a measure is “manifestly in our own interest.” Thus, refusing to implement something that he reckons is clearly for our own good only serves to highlight, in his all-knowing eyes, our problematic nature.

Although the majority of the article was nauseatingly familiar, there was one point he made which I fully support. As the United States currently has to deal with massive socioeconomic problems of its own, Friedman is of the opinion that America should not be wasting its time trying to force peace upon parties that obviously are not interested in achieving peace. Still further, as we apparently have other priorities more important than implementing the two-state solution, he suggests, “It is time we left them alone to pursue them and to live with the consequences.”

To this suggestion, I fully agree. Do what you must to salvage the teetering American empire and allow us to deal with our own local problems.

For years, America and the rest of the world have been unsuccessfully trying to ram the two-state solution down our throats. However, rather than honestly admitting that this proposed solution is in fact full of holes like a slice of Swiss cheese, they repeatedly try to force a square peg into a round hole.
Moreover, whenever it appears that no one in the region is willing to fulfill the requests of the White House, the Quartet or the UN, which is basically all the time, we are fed the broken record line of “the window of opportunity is closing.”

Enough already! Twenty years of these regurgitated “peace talks” are a joke. Everyone knows it, even if they are afraid to publicly state it. So Mr. Friedman, for once in my life I agree with you. Leave us alone and let us take care of our own problems and, if necessary, suffer the consequences. Regarding the US aid to Israel, a point that you mentioned several times, keep it. As funny as this may sound, you need it more than us.
