Moscow police arrested more than 700 people Wednesday across the city center in a bid to prevent ethnic clashes from erupting following the deadly shooting of a football fan, a spokesman said.
"By 6:30 pm (1530 GMT), we had made more than 700 arrests," Moscow city police spokesman Vitkor Biryukov told the Interfax news agency. He said about 400 of the arrests were made at the Kievsky train station, where police deployed more than 1,000 riot troops in anticipation of a street battle that was reportedly scheduled there for 6:00 pm (1500 GMT).
