Peres to visit particle accelerator
Israel is set to become member of CERN, world's largest center for particle physics in Geneva
President Shimon Peres will visit the world's largest particle accelerator next month, despite political objections by a number of countries.
The board of directors of CERN, which runs the Geneva-based project, is expected to approve Israel's membership in the coming days. The state is currently termed an "observer state".
Becoming a full-fledged member of the European institution will mean more scientific opportunities for Israel abroad, in addition to an invitation to visit the accelerator in Switzerland.
Peres, once invited, will closely observe the work of dozens of Israeli scientists working on the project.
CERN was established in 1954, and is currently the largest center for the study of particle physics in the world.
