UN accepts Israeli proposal to combat conflict diamonds

An Israeli proposal to enforce the Kimberley Process and the struggle against conflict diamonds was passed unanimously by the UN General Assembly. The process, set up seven years ago, aims to reduce the number of diamonds whose sale finances guerrilla groups in Africa by issuing certificates.

Israel's temporary UN representative, Ambassador Meiron Reuven, said this was an impressive achievement for Israel. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington)
