Minister speaks out against yeshiva student proposal

Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer Friday criticized the yeshiva students' allowance restriction plan: "This is not how you integrate haredim in to the labor force. The decision which will be presented to the government on Sunday will perpetuate the lack of integration of haredim in the labor market, poverty and unemployment in the haredi sector."
"This is a retreat from the draft which was first presented to the ministry," Ben-Eliezer added. "The next five years will see little if any progress or stipulations that allowances only be given out to those seeking vocational training. Yeshiva students over the age of 29 will be exempt from ever working, and that includes over 90% of the yeshiva students in the plan." (Attila Somfalvi)
