According to the Palestinians, the site served as a training base for Hamas's militarywing, Izz al-Din al-Qassam. The IDF said the aircrafts returned safely to their bases.
The IDF stressed that the attack was a response to the firing of rockets at the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council earlier on Tuesday. No injuries were reported, but damage was caused to several greenhouses.
"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens or IDF soldiers and will continue acting against any element using terror against the State of Israel," the army said. "The IDF sees Hamas as the sole bearer of responsibility for the state in the Gaza Strip."
In 2010, more than 230 rockets and mortar shells were fired from the Gaza Strip to Israel and there has recently been an escalation in the area.
