What made teen commit suicide?

Teen commits suicide after Facebook chat

Boy apparently hung himself after friends teased him online, but materials were erased from site

A teenage boy from a town in central Israel committed suicide Tuesday night after chatting with friends on the social networking site Facebook.

Orna, who heads the town's emergency response team, told Ynet, "There was apparently some trigger there."

She added that authorities did not know yet exactly what had been said to the boy to cause his final act because all materials had been erased from the site.

"The teen hung himself, part of the reason being because he was teased on Facebook," Orna said, but was unclear about which of his friends he had being speaking with. "I cannot say with total assurance if (his friends) made him do it," she explained.

The tragic case was exposed by Israel Radio Wednesday morning, after the teen was found dead in his room with the Facebook site open on his computer. Police are now investigating whether he had been speaking to schoolmates.

"In the coming week we are planning to conduct activities with teens and parents on their feelings about what happened," Orna said.

She also had a warning for parents. "In general, parents should be aware of what their children are doing and writing. If they can be friends with their kids on Facebook this can only help. Adults should be present in their children's lives."
