Engineering path to success

New Ort schools program gives 30 underprivileged outstanding students chance to make their way in world. 'They just need to study hard and invest all efforts in their own success,' says Education and Operations Director

Everybody wins with Ort's new program – students, the IDF and even the State: Thirty underprivileged students with a potential for excellence will be trained to be engineers before they even enlist in the army.

The program is an initiative of Ort Israel, which raised NIS 2 million ($558,815) for its implementation. Teachers in high schools throughout Israel were asked to locate highly motivated outstanding students who come from low socio-economic backgrounds - students who would never get a chance to fulfill their potential without that extra push.

The 30 students who will be chosen – after a tough selection process – will start a grueling seven-year training course called 'From Student to Engineer'. The program begins in the students' sophomore year in high school and when completed, the graduates enlist in the IDF as qualified engineers in the IDF's Academic Reserve Program, which entails an extended service period.

Studies are divided into two phases: The first phase includes a high school education – all classes taken at the advanced level, including mathematics, physics, electronics, computers, English and biology. The high school classes are taken at the Ort school in Netanya and all students enjoy boarding school living facilities. The engineering classes will be held at a nearby college.

The program will also include a culture program with the goal of enriching the students' world and broadening their horizons: Eight theatrical productions, two concerts, two ballets, development and empowerment workshops, group integration, leadership development activities and various after school activities including chess, martial arts, painting and dance.

Each student will also receive a laptop, educational assistance and university entry exam prep courses – all free of charge.

Education and Operations Director at Ort Israel Dr. Shmaryahu Rozner said, "We will accompany these students on the road to becoming engineers – a life changing experience for them. We will give them all the assistance we can offer, they just need to study hard and invest all efforts in their own success."
