The government on Sunday approved the reforms for recruiting haredim to the IDF with a majority of 23 ministers. Minister Avishay Braverman (Labor) opposed and ministers Dan Meridor and Benjamin Ben- Eliezer abstained. According to the proposal, a sweeping exemption will be provided to all yeshiva students over the age of 22, who have served one year of national service.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak welcomed the decision: "This is a step in the right direction of having haredi participation in bearing the public load." (Attila Somfalvi)
